Petition to Repeal the Ontario Breed Ban

Nov 21, 2007

Like you Caveat, Im starting to notice the resurgence of bully mythology like the 2,000 pounds-per-square-inch bite pressure myth or the locking jaws myth. Im guessing the source for that misinformation is the same source as it was in the 80s. Still, Im amazed that anyone believes it since it is so conspicuously false! Anyway, when I write my letters to these cities to give them actual facts, I always include the following blurb from the Tellings appeals court decision which is based on Dr. Brisbins testimony:
“...pit bulls do not have locking jaws. Based on actual dog dissections and measurement of their skulls, the evidence demonstrated that pit bull jaw muscles and bone structure are the same as other similarly sized dogs. No evidence was presented to demonstrate that a pit bull’s bite is any stronger than other dogs of its size and build…[C]ontrary to information relied upon and perpetuated by earlier case law…and law review articles…assertions that a pit bull can bite with a “force of 2,000 pounds per square inch” have absolutely no basis in fact or scientific proof. The testing of dog bite strength has never been done, and would be difficult if not impossible to perform.”

I actually have the paper published in 1989. The science was rigorous and objective and remains unrefuted or even challenged.
Lets face it, hyperbole and fear-mongering are effective if you want to bypass reasoning ability and grab people by the guts. How many people actually look into subjects to separate fact from fiction? If I were as afraid of dogs as some people seem to be, Id be researching them, talking to my vet, going to dog shows, etc, partly to find out if there was anything to fear but mostly to discover how many lies are being told by the media and others. I guess everything has to be Supersized these days, including hysterical news reports.
The only attempt to study the bite force (not pressure, thats something different) was a pilot done by Lindner D et al. It wasnt very successful because you cant tell a dog to bite as hard as possible for the test. The highest reading obtained was 1394 Newtons which translates into .202 psi.
You can read the abstract and other info at my post on Alligator bite force. Just search for Alligator in the box under my blog title. Its not very well written, I should redo it since Ive had a lot of hits on that post lately.
